A great project

Dear Editor:

I’d like to thank The Aspen Times for running Mr. Marc Friedberg’s opinion piece on the Aspen Art Museum (“The facts about a new art museum,” March 26). It’s nice to see that someone actually is taking the time to research this topic and thoughtfully cite facts to support a position.

I saw the vision for the beautiful new art museum on PLUM TV and think it looks like a great improvement over the existing building. It will be a great addition to Galena Plaza, opposite the public library, with fantastic views of Red Mountain and overlooking Rio Grande Park. It sensibly seems to solve previous concerns over public space, with community rooms available for use by theater, dancing, and other groups.

As a currently unemployed construction worker, I am excited to see that new projects might be coming on line. I know that I am not the only one in town that relies on the construction to make a decent wage, and in these lean times, I think any project that can put people to work is a great thing to support. There is no cost to the taxpayer, only gain.

A privately funded project which seeks to serve its community on the one hand by providing much needed construction jobs, and on the other by its long-term commitment to bringing great art to the community, can only be seen as a benefit.

I feel fortunate to live in an area where a simply astonishing building can be built to benefit so many people without burdening the community financially.
