A great partnership

Dear Editor:

Last night, some friends and I hosted a BeadforLife BeadParty and were awestruck by the amount of people who came out from the community. Thanks to all the generous attendees who purchased the homemade jewelry and goods, we raised more than $1,500 to help women in Uganda and help eradicate poverty in Africa.

By visiting the organization’s website (beadforlife.org), you can read about how to host your own BeadParty or purchase jewelry. BeadforLife partners with women in Uganda, providing opportunities for them to lift their families out of poverty by creating beaded jewelry.

While most of the money goes to community projects in Uganda, $360 of what we earned will go directly to the women who make these beaded necklaces out of recycled magazines. This means that in one night we raised the equivalent earnings of a year’s work for an average Ugandan woman.

A special thanks to the Pitkin County Library and to the Cantina. Deepest gratitude to all those present that night who helped to expand the caring network of people who want to take action against extreme poverty and partner with women in Uganda.
