A good yarn, a good cause

Dear Editor:On behalf of the Aspen Valley Ski/Snowboard Club, I would like to thank all those involved in raising over $1,900 for AVSC scholarships through the Scarves for Scholarship project. The idea for this project came to me in September while knitting a scarf in the waiting room at Aspen Valley Hospital, as my snowboarder son’s clavicle was being screwed back together.Kathleen Joyce, AVSC’s event director, thought it was an “excellent” idea, and outlined a plan. Classified ads and PSAs in The Aspen Times brought lots of donated yarn and interested in the project. Soon a colorful selection of scarves were hanging from the venetian blinds in the AVSC administration office. In mid-November, we brought 25 handmade scarves and eight hats to the St. Vincent’s Bazaar and raised $83. On Dec. 23 we set up a tent on the mall in Aspen, with 150 scarves and a dozens hats, and raised $800.It is amazing that with the help of the Aspen community, one little idea could blossom into a fun project with the potential to help so many kids learn to ski. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you Kathleen, Marlene, Joann, Jane, Katherine, Jan and the Yarn Gallery, Cyndy, Debbie, Cynthia and Cathy for your wonderful treats, and all of other AVSC parents and athletes who donated their time and talent to this project. Keep knitting!Kim VieiraAspen
