A good partnership

Dear Editor:

I want to respond to Andy Stone’s column in Wednesday’s Aspen Times regarding the merger of Aspen Writers’ Foundation and the Aspen Institute (“Are all writers bums and winos? Well, not exactly,”). As the longtime moderator of the AWF Weekly Writers’ Group and a board member as well, I am thrilled about our partnership with the Aspen Institute. While operating beneath the Aspen Institute umbrella, not only will the Aspen Writers’ Foundation continue to develop and refine its programs, we will grow and strengthen them. Writing continues to be an essential focus of our organization with our ongoing weekly writers groups (which are free and open to the public), the Aspen Summer Words workshops, and our growing programs for children in the valley schools and summer writing camps.

We are also proud to bring in some of the greatest authors and poets of our times to speak. As an author myself, I know how inspirational it can be to hear Ann Patchett talk about her writing process or listen to Scott Turow bemoan the many failures he experienced before his success. Therefore, while our speakers certainly entertain the general public, they also help us attain one of our main goals, to help writers at their craft.

For years the mission of the Aspen Writers’ Foundation has been to bring readers and writers together. We will continue to do our mission justice with our many free and affordable programs and events.
