A difficult challenge

I voted for our Town Council and applaud their visionary efforts to plan for the future of Snowmass. Snowmass is both a prestigious resort community and a close-knit community, and balancing different needs is a difficult challenge.

In my opinion, creating a vibrant town center is a good way to create on-mountain improvements, revive the town’s declining economy and sustain Snowmass’ character as a family oriented resort community. While other resorts are thriving, Snowmass has lost approximately 200,000 annual ski visits over the last five years.

Without new infrastructure and skiing improvements, the attractiveness of Snowmass will continue to drop, tax revenues to the town will continue to decline and property values and property taxes will be negatively impacted.

Snowmass residents who don’t own a home or business or work in town will also be affected, because a reduced tax base means the town will have to cut services or raise user fees.

Mayor Michael Manchester and the entire council are also to be commended for involving citizens in the discussion about the town’s future, and for carefully balancing all that input when it comes time to make a decision about the Base Village proposal.

I appreciate their efforts to make sure that future development results in maximum benefits to our community.
