A call for story poles

Dear Editor:

Today (June 10) I attended the COWOP meeting at the Limelight where the plans for the new versions of the Lift I A hotel were shown. There are two versions with different configurations of buildings. The parking has been reduced to something like 180 places. I raised the question of “story poles” so that one can get a real sense of the size and mass of all of this. Instead what is proposed are cranes – four or five – that can move around the site.

I do not think that this is adequate. It is like getting a sense of the scale of Mount Everest by moving around flag poles. The real issue about this project – parking and traffic aside – was always its size and mass, and the only way to judge this before the fact is with story poles.
