A boom and a bust
Dear Editor:Am I seeing things? Monday’s Times reported that Basalt’s targeted growth rate is about 6 percent per year (“Basalt’s future: grow up, or out?” Dec. 4).That is a doubling of the population in slightly over 11 years. Given such a scenario here is what Basalt could look like into the next century. Starting from 3,169 residents today:2017: 6,3382028: 12,6762039: 25,3522050: 50,7042061: 101,4082072: 202,8162083: 405,6322094: 811,2642105: 1,622,528Nice! Such a growth rate wildly exceeds anywhere else in the world and could create a totally unlivable place.John McBrideAspen

Onsite parking won out over a Turkish bath at a new lodge planned to be built across from City Market. Aspen’s elected officials didn’t want to burden the neighborhood with offsite parking for the new hotel.
