A bicyclist’s observations

Dear Editor:

I just finished my first Cemetery Lane, Rio Grande Trail loop of the season in training for Le Tour de Pine Creek. Here are a couple of observations.

I will not use the Cemetery Lane bike path above all on the descent. It is too dangerous. Cars coming out of the driveways and side streets do not look for bike path traffic until they are essentially on the path. We have already had one terrible accident ” Betty Severy ” and there will be more unless this is somehow dealt with. I think Cemetery Lane is safer if you watch the pot holes.

There is still a dog issue on the Rio Grande Trail. About half the dog owners use leashes and half don’t. I made myself extremely popular by asking the non-leashing people to leash. I informed one lady that there was a sign some 50 feet from where she was saying dogs must be leashed. I do not think she believed me and went back to look. This is a clue as to what must be done if we are serious about this.

The signs must be placed where they cannot be missed ” in the middle of the beginning and end of the trail for example. It would also be helpful if there was the odd patrol down there. This is only the beginning of the season, and it is going to get a lot worse.
