3A state track to open today

Aspen Times Staff Report

Area athletes will open the Class 3A State Track and Field Championships today at the Fountain-Fort Carson Sports Complex, south of Colorado Springs.

The Aspen Skiers qualified a bevy of athletes for the state championships, including distance aces Elizabeth Mitchell and Jon Severy.

Their first event at state is the 1600-meter run, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today.

On Saturday, Severy and Mitchell will challenge the state’s best 3200 runners. That race is set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Michael Otte and Conor Flynn of Aspen also qualified in the 3200.

In addition, senior Clay Shipp returns to the state meet. He qualified in three events – high jump, 300-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles.

The Skiers also qualified the boys 4×200 relay team after the Aspen foursome set a school record at the Regionals last weekend (1:40.15).

The relay team includes Matt Daniel, Tim Ingerick, Shannon Robinson and Jeff Anderson.

On the girls side, Mitchell will be joined by the AHS 4×800 relay team at state. Runners selected for that state relay team include Nicole Reno, Sarah Graber, Elizabeth Oakes and Lacey Gaechter.
