3A soccer matchups released

Aspen Times Staff Report

The playoffs are set.

The Colorado High School Activities Association released the bracketing for the girls 3A state soccer playoffs on Sunday. And the opponents are now set for Basalt and Aspen.

The Longhorns, regular-season champions of the 3A Western Slope League, were seeded No. 8 for the 16-team playoffs. As a No. 8 seed, Basalt will host the first-round match against No. 9 seed Telluride.

That match must be completed by next Saturday, May 13.

Aspen, the third state representative out of the WSL, was seeded No. 11. The Skiers will play at No. 6 Denver Christian in the first-round of the state soccer playoffs.

The league’s second representative, Battle Mountain, was seeded No. 10 in the 16-team bracket. The Huskies, who tied Aspen during the regular season, edged the Skiers for seeding purposes when league tiebreakers were considered.

Battle Mountain (6-5-3) will play at D’Evelyn in the Denver area in the first round. D’Evelyn (9-4-1) is seeded No. 7.

Aspen will take a 6-6-1 record into the state playoffs. The Skiers will take on a Denver Christian team that finished 8-4-1 in the regular season.

Basalt sports a 13-1-0 record for its match against Telluride.

If the Longhorns get past the first round, they will take on the winner of No. 1 seed Kent Denver (13-2-0) vs. Academy of Charter School (Denver, 5-2-1).

The second-round matches, like the first, are played at the site of the higher seeded team.

The winner of the Aspen-Denver Christian match will take on the winner of Colorado Springs Christian (13-0-0) vs. Ouray (4-4-0) in the second round.

Colorado Springs Christian is the No. 3 seeded team in the state while Ouray is No. 14.

Other matches on Aspen’s side of the bracket include No. 2 Faith Christian (13-1-0) vs. No. 15 Buena Vista (9-3-1); D’Evelyn vs. Battle Mountain; and C.S. Christian vs. Ouray.

On Basalt’s side of the bracket, other matches include No. 4 Colorado Academy (10-3-0) vs. No. 13 Heritage Christian (8-1-2); No. 5 Alexander Dawson (11-2-0) vs. No. 12 Pueblo West (10-3-0); and No. 1 Kent Denver vs. No. 16 Academy of Charter School.

In the 4A state soccer playoffs, Rifle (7-4-5) will play at No. 4 Dakota Ridge (14-1-0). Rifle defeated Grand Junction Central 2-0 last weekend to reach the state playoffs.

And Montrose, a winner over Steamboat Springs last week, will play at No. 3 Broomfield (14-2-0). Montrose is 5-6-2 on the year and seeded No. 14 in Class 4A.

Defending state champion ThunderRidge (14-1-0) is the top seed in 4A. ThunderRidge handed 3A Basalt its only loss.
