3A and 3B both need approval

Dear Editor:The RE-1 school bond and mill levy have served a purpose even greater than their obvious intent of providing renovated and new schools for our three communities.Parents such as us, who never crossed paths in 13 years of living in the same small town, have found an incredible support system of citizens willing to step up to the plate and work toward the continuing improvement of public education. The network of retired citizens, community activists, politicians, business owners and educators that have come forward to support the campaign is a boost for the conviction that the needs of children come first.Through this effort, our town has shed its controversial cloak in the best interest of not only Carbondale’s children, but the children of two other towns. We have found that there is more that unites us than divides us. Hopefully this cooperative effort can be extended into a working relationship that can only benefit our three towns in the future. The lengthy process to determine the content of the bond and mill levy, and the firm decision that both proposals were integral in the improvement of education in our valley, involved teachers, parents and community members from every facet of society. They believe that to pass one without the other is an incomplete attempt at retaining staff and improving schools – if we increase operating costs through the mill levy, but then drain educational funds because we fail to pass the bond issue, what have we truly accomplished for our tax dollars? The $53 million band aid to bring schools up to temporary safety standards would take away from needed curriculum funding that our teachers and students rely on.We urge voters to realize the interconnection of the bond and the mill levy in what our schools, students and teachers need. Please vote yes for both 3A and 3B.Ann Gianinetti and Denise MossCarbondale
