20 years of free skiing

Dear Editor:This year is the 20th anniversary of the Aspen Snowmass free cross country ski trail system. Congratulations and many thanks to the volunteer Aspen Snowmass Nordic Council, the landowners who provide the trail easements and the three local governments who fund one of the truly great free cross country trail systems in the country. This is why Aspen and Snowmass are great ski towns. The grooming crew that sets and maintains the trail system has done a super job this winter. Skiers can ski from the Aspen Nordic Center under Highway 82 at the Roundabout through the Moore Open Space to the ARC over to the high school/Meadowood track or across the Maroon and Castle Creek Road pedestrian bridges to the Marolt open space without ever taking off their skis. Fantastic skiing! Many thanks to the walkers and bikers for sharing the bridges during the snowy months. For those wanting a longer ski, the 25 kilometer trail from the Aspen Nordic Center across Buttermilk and Owl Creek to the Snowmass Nordic Center is a wonderfully maintained trail and great town-to-town ski experience. Also, don’t forget to ski along the river at NorthStar or take the Rio Grande Trail to Woody Creek and beyond. Skiers going with their dogs can enjoy the Bernese Boulevard trail around the perimeter of the Aspen Golf Course. Lots of great choices!Again, happy birthday to 20 years of free cross country skiing.Howie MalloryAspen
