Cooking for a cause at the 3rd annual Aspen BBQ Cook-Off

When seven restaurants sign on in the spirit of friendly rivalry to support a charitable cause and tickets and tables sell out in record time, it makes for a special evening all around. Such was the case for the 3rd Annual Aspen BBQ Cook-Off at Ajax Tavern on Thursday, Aug. 16. Raising $60,000 for the Aspen Homeless Shelter, the event was a grand success, supporting a cause dependent on support from the community as they offer a hand up, not a handout, to its visitors.

Participating chefs presented their take on the best barbecue from ribs to pulled pork to shrimp to pork shoulder and more. The roster of culinary talent included the defending championship duo of Jim Butchart and Andrew Helsley with Aspen Skiing Co. Catering, Troy Selby and Justin Todd of 520 Grill, and Keith Theodore and Oscar Carrasco, both from The Little Nell. The podium finishers were “the Three Amigos” in third place — hotel general managers Tony DiLucia of the Hotel Jerome, Heather Steenge-Hart of The St. Regis Aspen and Simon Chen of The Little Nell. In second place, Chris Randall represented Rustique Bistro. And the 2018 champions were the trio of Chris Lanter, Kyle Wilkins and Amy Fritzsche with Home Team BBQ.
