Project Graduation

by MAY SELBY

Graduation season is upon us as ceremonies and celebrations were staged up and down the valley last week. Pleasant summer weather combined with the greening aspen leaves and fragrant lilac bushes certainly set the tone for positive transitions and bright futures ahead.

Among the many commencements, several preschools honored their pint-sized graduates in caps and gowns including Aspen Mountain Tots, the Early Learning Center and the Wildwood School. Aspen High School’s graduation tradition at the Benedict Music Tent came full circle, featuring an alumnus for the commencement speaker. The class of 2013’s Alex Ferreira, a professional skier who’s having a really good year (winning a silver medal in the Winter Olympics in South Korea and a crystal globe at the World Cup Finals in France) was having a rather challenging day traveling home for the ceremony. It took a village to ensure he made it to the main event with a rerouted flight and then a private charter for the very last leg. He arrived on time to deliver an inspiring message, expressing gratitude for this community and all of the support and encouragement that’s provided to set and reach goals no matter how sublime.
