Mountain Mayhem: Closing Day on Ajax
Mountain Mayhem
Thanks to Aspen Snowmass, Aspen Mountain stayed open for a bonus week of skiing, officially calling it quits on Sunday, April 24. A little bit less rowdy than Aspen Highlands closing day, there were still sightings of costumed skiers and snowboarders with one couple sporting hot dog costumes, a few people in banana outfits, and a fair share of wigs and capes, but otherwise most dressed for the elements. The morning started out blustery with wind and snow though a bit of sun peeked out throughout the day. The Sundeck hosted a band inside and was prepared with an organized line at the bar with an A-team of four bartenders working hard from start to close. Cheers to a great winter with – for the most part – a bounty of snow. From the Christmas storms to the surprise dumps in April, I had some of my all-time favorite days on the slopes this season.
This week in Aspen history
“Without any exception the worst snow storm known since the advent of the railroad west of Leadville has been raging over the crest of the continental divide since last Thursday,” asserted the Aspen Tribune on January 31, 1899.
