For his wife Laura’s 50th birthday on March 2, Jay Coarsey of Carbondale concocted a plan to make it special and also be mindful of safety guidelines during these uncertain times. He planned a small outdoor gathering for her birthday proper, inviting close friends and neighbors to celebrate. He also arranged to have a surprise guest in attendance who flew in from Little Rock, Arkansas, where “Lala” grew up.

The birthday girl started her day at TAC Fitness with friends, lifting weights at a Body Pump class. Next up was brunch at Café Bernard in Basalt followed by a massage. When she returned home that afternoon, Lala discovered her husband busy prepping for the small party in her honor that evening. She also took note of the smell of bacon wafting through the air. “Why are you making bacon?” she asked. “Because I’m making BLTs,” Jay replied. And in that moment, her dad, Duke Davis, came around the corner and said “Surprise!” She knew it was a clue since BLTs are her dad’s favorite sandwich and was elated to see this all come together. Her dad had just had his second vaccination and was cleared to travel in time for the celebration.

“I woke at 5 am in Little Rock to come to Colorado and surprise Laura on her 50th, just like I did for her older brother George when he turned 50,” her dad said. “I’m sure glad I made this trip.”

“I feel so spoiled,” said Lala as she looked around at her birthday gathering. “I have the most dear friends and family. I’m so grateful.”
