Gunner’s Libation: Lavazza Espresso martini

by Jeanne McGovern

MAKE IT

A full cup of coffee

1 ounce vodka

1 ounce Frangelico

6 ice cubes

.2 ounces sugar

½ Gianduiotto chocolate

Make an espresso and add sugar. Place the ice, sweetened coffee, vodka and Frangelico in the shaker. Shake well and pour the contents into a martini glass.

When The Little Nell celebrated #LavazzaLove Day on Jan. 31, I figured the apres-ski event at Chair 9 would be a tasty diversion to my work day. But the Lavazza Espresso Martini that was the focal point of the party was more than just another fancy cocktail. This espresso martini — and trust me, I’ve had my fair share — packed a punch. In a surprisingly smooth way. I’m not sure if it was the coffee (Lavazza, of course) or the vodka/Frangelico combo, but this adrenaline-fueled libations went down perfectly. And the sugar/coffee ground rim was like icing on the cake. Or, maybe the bon bons made with Lavazza from Little Nell executive chef Matt Zubrod was the topper. Regardless, this was an apres tasting worth enjoying just about any afternoon.

Libations was created by beloved Aspen Times publisher Gunilla Asher, who died June 2, 2014, after a brave battle with cancer. Cheers – to Gunner!
