Aspen Times Weekly Libation: All-American Sangria
1 bottle fruity yet dry white wine (Pinot Grigio or Riesling)
1 cup light rum
1 bottle seltzer (Polar Pomegranate Sangria Seltzer is great), chilled
Strawberries, cut into quarter spears
Star Fruit, sliced
Mix together all ingredients except the seltzer and refrigerate for 2-3 hours (be sure to also refrigerate the seltzer). Before serving add seltzer to mixture and stir gently. Garnish glasses with extra fruit before pouring in cocktail mix.
The Fourth of July can be a long day. Here in Aspen, it often begins with the Boogie’s Buddy Five foot race, followed by the parade and barbecues, and topped off with a concert and fireworks. One thing I’ve learned the hard way is that it is not easy to drink your way through all of this — or at least not by mixing drinks (Bloody Mary to beer to tequila is not a recipe for a successful holiday). So this year, I’m going with my new favorite summertime cocktail — Sangria — with a red, white and blue twist. Not only does this All-American Sangria sound totally refreshing and easy to sip from day into night, it looks festive in your glass. And since it takes just a few hours to make, I can easily fit this into my Fourth of July festivities. Cheers!
