Stewart Oksenhorn The Aspen Times

A dozen years ago, a start-up acoustic band on its first tour pulled into town for a little gig atop Aspen Mountain. Attendance was tiny, and it would be a handful of years before the group visited again, for a show at the Wheeler Opera House that also was sparsely attended. The band could have easily faded away, but this proved to be the little engine that could. Railroad Earth kept chugging, picking up fans — Hobos, they call themselves — from their home state of New Jersey to Colorado, where their following has become especially strong. With a mix of Celtic jams, bluegrass drive, and lyrics that speak touchingly of community, tranquility and the environment, the band has piled up some notable accomplishments — including last year’s Aspen appearance, when they followed a free outdoors show with a sold-out gig at Belly Up. Railroad Earth returns to the club on Sunday, July 14; perhaps they’ll play “Colorado,” written during that first tour.
