Aspen History: ‘Clean your sidewalks’

“Clean your sidewalks,” instructed the Aspen Democrat on March 5, 1909. “The ladies will bless you if you shovel the snow and slush off your sidewalks- and besides your property will increase 400 percent in valuation. It’s a fact. As it is now it is a shame for the ladies to tramp through the slush and water along our main streets – and all for the want of a little patriotism on the part of the men folks. Grab a shovel, fellers and shovel! It won’t hurt you and you will feel better when you see the dears smile! Yes you will!” The image above shows a group of women standing in the snow in front of an Aspen home in the early 1900s.
