Jim Gaffigan: ‘Skiing was obviously a rich person’s idea’

In advance of his two sold-out shows at the Wheeler Opera House on Friday night, comedian Jim Gaffigan posted a ski-themed video bit on social media poking some good-natured fun at Aspen’s reason for being.

“Skiing was obviously a rich person’s idea,” the superstar clean comic says in the 35-second video, posted last Wednesday on Twitter. “Somebody probably looked at a mountain and thought, ‘Oh! That mountain’s beautiful. I’d love to ski down it. But can someone build a contraption that could carry me up to the top? … I want to be out there with nature, but halfway up the mountain, I’d love if there was a coffee shop.’”

The bit originally ran as part of a larger segment on CBS’s “Sunday Morning” a year ago.

Gaffigan’s hotly anticipated Aspen shows come on the heels of the premiere his film “Light for Light” at the Sundance Film Festival and they follow the 2018 release of his latest comedy special, “Noble Ape.”

The show marks an unofficial early start for the Wheeler’s Aspen Laugh Festival, which runs Feb. 20 to 23 at the historic theater and includes headlining spots from popular comics including Tig Notaro, Jo Koy, Nate Bergatze, Kathleen Madigan, Rachel Feinstein, Moshe Kasher and Julian McCullough.
