“Aspen woman trapped in canyon while fishing,” announced The Aspen Times on June 5, 1941. “Mrs. Violet Lavey of Aspen had a harrowing experience on a ledge of rock on Maroon Creek last Wednesday night when she spent several hours clinging to the ledge before being rescued. Mrs. Lavey had been fishing up Maroon from the highway bridge west of town and reached a point in the canyon across from the old Maurin ranch just above the dump grounds when she slipped from a rock into the stream. The water was deep and swift but Mrs. Lavey managed to pull herself to a ledge from which she could not escape. The canon wall is a sheer cliff between 75 and 100 feet high at that place and as the creek was rising rapidly the unfortunate angler was afraid to try wading out through the stream. Mrs. Lavey’s calls for help were heard by passersby and a number of people went out from town to assist with the rescue, which was finally effected about 11 o’clock by lowering a rope over the cliff and pulling her up to the top. Mrs. Lavey escaped with minor bruises but she has lost all her enthusiasm for fishing, at least for the present.” This image shows a bridge across Maroon Creek.
