Jazz Aspen Snowmass will celebrate its 25th anniversary all year long in 2015 with a lineup of high profile artists including Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves and Nile Rodgers, the nonprofit announced Thursday.
The lineup includes acclaimed artists who have visited Jazz Aspen over the years, alongside others making their local debuts and a series of collaborations with nonprofits.
Anniversary shows announced Thursday include Jazz Aspen’s first events at the Wheeler Opera House in over five years, starting with the Feb. 4 return of Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves in “Strings Attached” featuring guitar virtuosos Russell Malone and Romero Lumbambo, who last performed here at the June Festival at Rio Grande Park in 2008.
On Saturday, Feb. 14, dynamic pianist Marcus Roberts & His Trio will make their Jazz Aspen debut. Deemed a certifiable genius by Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts is able to play jazz in any style, from Fats Waller to Thelonious Monk to Ray Charles.
The popular JAS Café Downstairs at the Nell series enters its fourth full season in 2015, welcoming back jazz and soul vocalist Nicole Henry for special holiday shows on Jan. 2 and 3. Winner of the 2014 Soul Train Jazz Award, Henry made a memorable debut at the Café in August of 2013. Guitar masters and international sensations Frank Vignola & Vinnie Raniolo with special guest Andreas Oberg, make their JAS Café debut Feb. 26 and 27. Vignola and Raniolo perform hundreds of concerts world-wide annually, bringing their dazzling technique, great stage presence and wildly diverse styles from gypsy jazz and swing to startling reinventions of songs from every genre imaginable. Funky and soulful New Orleans pianist and vocalist Jon Cleary & His Trio return for their first winter show since 2012 on March 20 and 21. More shows will be announced soon, according to a press release.
The JAS Aspen Snowmass June Experience returns to Aspen June 26 –July 11, 2015, including performances at both the Benedict Music Tent and the JAS Café. The nonprofit again collaborates with the Aspen Music Festival & School for the return engagement of Wynton Marsalis & the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on Monday, July 6. Marsalis first performed at JAS in 1998 and has since performed on numerous occasions with his all-star ensemble big band of brilliant soloists and arrangers.
On Friday, July 17, Jazz Aspen will host its summer benefit, with a performance by the disco, funk and soul hit-makears Chic featuring Nile Rodgers. Dubbed “Le Freak Lounge,” in honor of the Chic mega-hit “La Freak.” Tickets and information for “Le Freak Lounge,” a fundraiser for Jazz Aspen Snowmass music education programming, will be available Labor Day weekend. The benefit will honor Janus Capital Group founders Tom Bailey and Mark Whiston, for their stewardship of the Janus JAS Title Sponsorship from 1993–2005. The Janus sponsorship effectively put JAS on the map permanently during a period of dynamic growth for the organization.
Jazz Apsen will announce more dates and artists in the coming months, as well as new programs and initiatives for its 25th season. For more information go to jazzaspensnowmass.org or call 970-920-4996.
