The Square Grouper on Hopkins Avenue is hosting a slew of local musicians this weekend to celebrate its first anniversary.

The New Orleans-style restaurant and bar has carved out a niche as a locals joint in a downtown that’s seen the decline of many of them in recent years.

“Somehow, someway, we’re a year old,” said the bar’s owner and general manager Mike Goldman.

Neighbor noise complaints, menu changes and the usual ups and downs of a new restaurant and bar notwithstanding, Goldman calls the Grouper’s first year a success because of the locals’ response.

The Mardi Gras-themed anniversary party will feature music by members of local funk and rock bands the Natural Disasters and Corduroy Rogers (known for the night as Corduroy Disasters), along with guests from the Bar Band, Mark Nussmeier and other familiar faces from the local scene.

“We’re bringing in some of the best musicians in town,” said singer and multi-instrumentalist Trenton Allan, who is currently playing with Corduroy Rogers.
