City of Aspen seeks input on pedestrian mall project

The city of Aspen and its design team partner, Design Workshop, announced a public project kick-off event for the Pedestrian Mall Improvement Project this Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. This outdoor event will be held near Wagner Park and the public restrooms. The public engagement team will provide activities to capture citizen interest in the initial stages of this critical project.

“The goal of the project kick-off event is to provide a casual opportunity for the public to get initial project information, meet members of the project team, learn about the project phases and begin collecting emails for our project newsletters and public engagement opportunities,” said Tim Thompson, capital asset manager for the city and project team lead.

The Pedestrian Mall Improvement Project includes 130,000 square feet on the Hyman, Mill, Cooper and Galena street malls. The project will be implemented in five phases, each involving public input. Phase I and II will be underway through December 2017.

The Aspen Pedestrian Mall surface is more than 40 years old and some of the underground infrastructure has not been upgraded in 60 years. Not only are the bricks reaching the end of their lives, but the surface is uneven and is not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations. Most of the mall trees are reaching maturity, and their size and confined growing space creates challenges for their health.

The end goal is to include extensive public feedback, improve the pedestrian experience, retain the mall’s historical, beloved character and supply the most efficient utility service possible.
