Schendler unleashed

Given its provocative content, very little commentary has been provoked by Auden Schendler's column "People power can still make democracy work" (Commentary, April 27, 2017, The Aspen Times), in which he exhorts his global warming co-believers to extreme, revolutionary measures, such as blocking Trump Tower for six months and stopping commerce (subliminally comparing such an act to killing two guards while breaking into Versailles and making Louis XVI do a perp walk), or provoking police enough at some protest to take a rubber bullet for the cause.

Let me guess at a few reasons for the silence.

First, Mr. Schendler employs and/or manages so many people and affects so much business in Basalt that few residents wish to get on the wrong side of him by questioning his views.

Or, perhaps, even those who think as he does are a little embarrassed for him by this particular piece. It's hard to say, "You go, bro," when bro is sounding like an anarchist.

Finally, perhaps readers have just grown bored by the subject. A recent Pew survey reports that 65 percent of the American public has little to no interest in the portended global-warming apocalypse. Whether they are wiser or more ignorant than Mr. Schendler is immaterial: You need people in order to exercise "people power."
