Letter: Change a child’s life

As you may have noticed, January is National Mentoring Month! This is the month when the Buddy Program makes a big push to get you involved as a mentor with the Buddy Program. Maybe you have been thinking about doing this for months or even years. Today is the day to get in touch with us and find out how easy it is!

Two things that I regularly hear from our new Big Buddies are, "I can't believe how much my Little Buddy and I have in common," and "The Buddy Program really makes this easy!" There is a reason that Buddy pairs stay together for four years, on average, more than twice the time of most mentoring programs, including large national programs. Because we go to great lengths to pair you with someone that shares your interests, you will find that you have plenty to do with your Little Buddy simply by doing the things you already love to do — simply include your Little Buddy once a week. And when you become a Big Buddy, you are paired with a case manager who is with you every step of the way, there to offer advice and strategies to make your relationship as satisfying as possible and to intervene when necessary to keep things on track.

As a Big Buddy myself, I can attest to the power of mentoring and how easy it can be. While there is no silver bullet to address the many challenges and opportunities faced by youth today, mentoring is one of the more powerful tools that we as a community have. So get involved today — you really will change two lives: yours and your Little Buddy's!
