Letter: Agriculture isn’t fragrance-free

I read with amusement Bonny DeWeese’s letter about the odors emanating from High Valley Farms (“Pot farm can’t continue,” Letters to the Editor, The Aspen Times, Aug. 30). There are some odors coming from the farm, and it is trying to abate the problem. But the real problem is that a huge tract of land that once was agricultural was transformed into housing by a real estate developer back in 1965. Prior to that time, there was Highland Welding, United Lumber and a bunch of horses and cows on this land. The aroma left by the excrement of these fine farm animals was no more or no less pungent than the skunklike odor emitted by High Valley Farms. The real problem is that a bunch of city whiners bought houses in Holland Hills and didn’t do their due diligence about the odors of the agriculture business. Maybe a nice California farmette is your style, with the good California air and the smell of the crap that comes out of your exhaust pipe.
