RIFLE, Colo. ” A man involved in an oil and gas well pad accident late Monday night near Rifle died Tuesday afternoon from multiple injuries including head trauma.

The accident victim was Talliesin Hayden, 38, of Butte, Mont., according to Garfield County Deputy Coroner Kristin Clifford. He died at about 4:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. Hayden was flown there very early Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Monday night at a Laramie Energy well pad, about five miles southwest of Rifle in the area of Flatiron Mesa. Hayden was a Halliburton employee providing wireline services at the well pad, Halliburton said.

Halliburton communications manager Diana Gabriel said in an e-mail that wireline services involve sending a string of tools that collect and analyze data down into a well by using a wireline.

Tanny McGinnis, Garfield County sheriff’s community relations deputy, said a 100-pound, 29-foot-long tube fell and struck Hayden in the head when a cable broke.

Initial reports over police radio said the worker suffered severe head lacerations and an ankle injury.

Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission director Dave Neslin couldn’t be immediately reached. A message left with the Garfield County Oil and Gas Department wasn’t immediately returned.
