Stop fluoridation before it’s too late

Dear Editor:

The incredible music this summer at the Benedict Tent and all around town has been truly amazing. This includes the great free Thursday night concerts in Snowmass Village. All I can say is “wow,” and thanks to all involved. Now, on to an equally important happening in town and that is the pouring of tons of toxic waste into our drinking water over the last 45 years or more.

There have been sporadic letters to the editor back and forth from either side. I thought I should share with you some quotes from doctors and other health professionals around the world.

The U.S. Army Command, MEDCOM in charge of Walter Reed, and three other major installations were concerned about water fluoridation. They contacted an expert in neurotoxicity. Dr. Mullenix stated “fluoride exposures today are out of control … there are no advantages to water fluoridation. The risks today far exceed the hoped for benefit.” Dr. Mullenix cites data from 18 clinical studies.

A toxicological profile done by the Department of Health and human resources revealed that certain people may be unusually susceptible to the toxic effects of fluoride and its compounds. These populations include the elderly, people with deficiencies of calcium, magnesium, and/or vitamin C, and people with cardiovascular and kidney problems

Dr. Arvid Carlsson, co-winner of the Nobel Prize for medicine (2000), made this statement: “I would advise against fluoridation.”

Dr. Charles Gordon Heyd, past President of the AMA: “I am appalled at the prospect of using water as a vehicle for drugs. Fluoride is a corrosive poison that will produce serious effects on a long range basis. Any attempt to use water this way is deplorable.”

Dr. William Marcus, Senior Toxicologist at EPA stated: “E.P.A. should act immediately to protect the public, not just on the cancer data, (involving fluoride in water), but on the evidence of bone fractures, arthritis, mutagenicity and other effects.”

These are just a few of the many professionals that are aware of the dangers of this practice.

Here it is simply stated. The FDA does not have approval for the fluoride added to our water and it is considered an unapproved drug. Since naturally occurring fluoride is already in many foods and beverages, an estimated total intake of existing fluoride amounts is imperative. Research shows fluoridation is unnecessary since we’re already receiving 300 percent or more of the Dental Association’s recommended daily amount. Yet we have doctors and dentists around here and all over that have not researched this practice yet support it with very outdated research and any real evidence of it being helpful.

And I contend that many that support this continued practice are paid to do so. Maybe not every medical professional, but some. An example is Delta Dental, the largest dental insurance company in California. They advocate fluoridation and give grants to cities who fluoridate. In one area alone they gave more than $1 million. In what could only be considered a hypocritical action since they won’t pay for any dental repair work caused by fluorosis, one of the side effects of too much fluoride.

And not to be repetitive, it is not naturally occurring calcium fluoride we are adding, but hexafluorosilic acid, scraped from the smokestacks of the phosphate fertilizer industry in China and packaged up and sold to us. Why are they scraping it from their smoke stacks, you ask? It was killing crops and farm animals in the areas this was taking place and not to mention damage done to the people in those areas. Most doctors and dentists that support this don’t even have a clue where this toxic garbage comes from.

So Aspen, Colorado, keep the great music coming in this incredible place and get the fluoride out of our water. Aspen Tap — so, so – but much better once this toxic poison is discontinued. Council, do it now, not months or years from now.
