Volleyball: Basalt loses in five sets to Rifle
October 18, 2016
Tuesday’s five-set loss to visiting Rifle is an all too familiar feeling for the Basalt High School volleyball team. In fact, it was only Saturday in Rifle when the Bears also beat the Longhorns in five sets.
Unlike Saturday, when Basalt rallied from a set down to ultimately fall, Tuesday’s match was dominated early by the host Longhorns inside the BHS gymnasium.
Basalt cruised through the first two sets, winning 25-19 and 25-16, before a surge midway through the third set by Rifle led to a 25-20 win for the visitors. The Bears carried their momentum into the fourth set, pulling out a 26-24 nail biter. In that set, Rifle led 20-15 until Basalt mounted a rally, going as far as taking a 21-20 lead. Some late hitting errors by the Longhorns derailed the comeback attempt.
In the decisive fifth set, Rifle jumped out to a 7-1 lead. Instead of roll over, the Longhorns rallied, an 8-0 run putting them ahead 11-10. The last few points belonged to Rifle, though, which won 15-13 to win 3-2 over Basalt for the second time in four days.
Rifle (5-15 overall) and Basalt (4-13) will face each other for a third time next week in the season finale, a late addition to the schedule. That game will be played in Basalt.
The Longhorns have two matches before then: Thursday at home against Aspen and Saturday at Olathe. Aspen (7-9 overall) beat Basalt, 3-1, in their only match this season.
