Tough test for prep golfers in Carbondale

CARBONDALE ” After a challenging round Monday at Carbondale’s River Valley Ranch, both local high school golf teams should be tuned up for what will be a regional preview Tuesday at the Aspen Golf Club.
Basalt’s Marty Knous finished near the top of the leader board again Monday, albeit with one of his highest scores of the season. He shot an 11-over 83 to wind up third on a day when scores were inflated for the entire field.
Eagle Valley’s Nick Bontempo earned medalist honors after beating teammate Kevin Stough in a playoff after each golfer fired a round of 79. Behind the 1-2 finish, the Devils also took top honors as a team with a low score of 242. Summit County was second (263) and Battle Mountain third (266), followed by Basalt (268) and Aspen (276) in the field of 10.
Individually, Basalt’s Patrick Hall was the only other local golfer to finish in the top 10, tying for 10th with Eagle Valley’s Evan Buzbee with an 88.
Aspen freshman Bobby Moyer “who won a tournament earlier this season with a round of 77 ” led the Skiers with a 91, followed by teammates Hunter Ross (92) and Ryan Smith (93).
Basalt’s Luke Newberry and Kyp Schvon tied for 97 to add to the Longhorns’ final team score.
