LEADVILLE, Colo. ” This rout wasn’t as surprising as the one Aspen opened its season with last year.

After a dream 2007 season which ended with its first playoff appearance in 33 years, Aspen opened its 2008 season right where it left off, pummeling Lake County, 63-6.

Skiers senior running back Beau Seguin rumbled for five touchdowns and more than 200 yards in a game that Aspen led 49-0 at the half. Junior quarterback Anderson Cole and running back Nicky Ufkes also had touchdowns and JV player Joey Ackland scored Aspen’s last touchdown.

The Skiers starting defense ” which recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown of its own ” pitched a shutout into the second half before reserves allowed Lake County’s only score.

Skiers coach Mike Sirko was pleased with his team’s effort, but cautioned not to read too much into the lopsided score.

“[Lake County has] a new coach and it’s a program kind of in an infancy state,” he said. “They just weren’t that solid of a team. We jumped on them early and forced them into a lot of errors. Our kids came ready to play.”

With Seguin leading the way, the Skiers offense moved the ball with ease. Sophomore kicker Dan Munger converted all nine of his extra-point attempts.

“We had a lot of one and two-play drives,” Sirko said. “They executed pretty well.”

Aspen next hosts Rangely at 7 p.m. Friday, the first of two home games before traveling downvalley to face rival Basalt on Sept. 19.

“We’ve still got some things to work on,” Sirko said. “We’ve got to work on our timing routes and just having more consistency. Making sure that we don’t make some of the mental mistakes. Defensively, we can improve our technique.”
