ASPEN ” Blue River resident and freestyle snowmobiling pioneer Jay Quinlan crashed hard in his second run during the sport’s Winter X Games debut Thursday night, finishing ninth in a field of 10 and failing to qualify for Sunday night’s primetime finals at Buttermilk Ski Area.

Kremmling’s Chris Burandt, arguably the most accomplished snowmobiler in the world over the past two years, won the elimination round with a score of 89.33 points. Aleksander Nordgaard of Norway finished second (85.66), Sweden’s Daniel Bodin took third (79.66) and Heath Frisby, an Idaho native who did much of his X Games training in Summit County, secured the fourth and final qualifying spot with 78.66 points.

Frisby will meet Burandt and Nordgaard will face off against Bodin in Sunday’s head-to-head semifinals.

Quinlan, whose ninth-place finish came from his first-run score of 38 points, bailed from his machine while some 10 feet in the air when he realized he was coming up way short on a jump early in his second run. The crash left him on the snow for more than five minutes as medical staff attended to him. As of press time there was no word on his injury.

The crash came shortly after Quinlan landed what appeared to be a rare no-handed backflip.
