Nordic races come to Crown Mountain Park on Sunday

Crown Mountain Park in El Jebel is enjoying such good nordic skiing conditions this winter that it will host its first races ever Sunday.
The family-friendly event will include men’s and women’s races in classic, freestyle and a five-kilometer endurance race. There also will be a kids race for all ages up to 16 and a “doggie dash” for owners and their pets. Prizes will be provided by R.J. Paddywacks for the doggie dash.
Registration is at 9 a.m. The first race is at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $5 for one race and $10 for two or more races.
Crown Mountain Park began setting classic and skate tracks last season. Early snow and cold conditions created a good base that lasted well into the winter. This year, conditions have been ideal, with ample early-season snow creating a base that easily lasted through the dry January. Full-moon skiing events have attracted more than 40 skiers, and people are hitting the groomed course every day.
“The course here has been extremely popular this winter, and so we’re putting on a race for the whole family to enjoy,” said Kat Fitzpatrick, park recreation director. Contact her at 970-963-6030 for more information about the races, or register online at www.crownmtn.org.
