ASPEN – Sam Rappaport and Gus Gregory scored two goals each Saturday to lead the Aspen High hockey team over Chatfield at Lewis Ice Arena.
Aspen head coach Al Butler said his team recovered nicely after falling 2-1 to Columbine in overtime Friday. The Skiers (5-3) outshot the Chargers (5-4-1), 42-15.
“We came out strong and came out ready to play like we did Friday night from the beginning,” he said.
Aspen’s Garrett Goldsmith started the scoring late in the first period as the Skiers outshot Chatfield 12-4 in the opening period.
“We kept (Chatfield’s) top line in check,” Butler said. “They have pretty good goal scorers, and we kept them in check the entire game.”
Aspen pulled away in the second period. Gregory scored two goals, and Rappaport scored his first. The Chargers managed to get on the board with one score in the second off a rebound, but down 4-1 going in to the third, the game was well out of reach for Chatfield.
“We were getting the puck in deep and then getting to it,” Butler said. “We then got the puck to open guys. We did that pretty well today.”
The Skiers are 2-2 over the past four games and look to win back-to-back games for the first time since early December. Aspen travels to Monarch on Friday.
“Tonight we played three periods strong and not just two,” Butler said. “As long as we can continue that, hopefully we can get back on the winning track.”
