Basalt High wrestlers win three duals

Tristan Diamond of Basalt works against a Battle Mountain opponent this week.

The Basalt High School wrestling team won its third consecutive dual with a 41-31 victory at Salida on Friday night.

The Longhorns earlier this week beat Frisco 58-21 and then defeated Battle Mountain 48-36.

On Friday night, Olmer Marquez of the Longhorns pinned HL Scott of Salida early in the second period at 220 pounds.

Marquez, fourth at state last year, is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A this year at 220.

Alex Alberto of Basalt pinned Kordell Redmiles of Salida in the third period of their match at 160 pounds.

Jack Huggard of the Longhorns, wrestling at 195 pounds, pinned Hunter Wall of Salida at the 2;59 mark of the match.

At 113 pounds, Nathan Rivera of Basalt pinned Will Zielinko of Salida late in the third period.

Also, at 120 pounds, Basalt's Leighton Albright won by forfeit ad did Basalt's William Rivera at 182 pounds. Julius Vazquez of Basalt also won by forfeit at 145.

In other matches, Josh Scott of Salida pinned Tai Kim of Basalt at 132 pounds.

Jeremy Scott of Salida pinned Sander Elliot of Basalt at 138 pounds.

Trevor Love of Salida pinned Thomas Wirth in their 170-pound match.

And Juan Doyle of Salida edged Oswaldo Morales of Basalt 6-5 at 285.

The three dual wins this week set the stage for coach Ryan Bradley and the Longhorns to compete in the annual Salida Invitational on Saturday at Salida High School.

Against Battle Mountain, Oswaldo Morales of Basalt won by pin over Demetrio Velasco of Battle Mountain in the 285-pound weight class.

At the other end of the spectrum, Basalt's Zach Pagan picked up a win by forfeit in the 106-pound class.

At 113 pounds, Basalt's Nathan Rivera won by pin over Humberto Estrada of the Huskies. The pin came in the first period.

Basalt also collected forfeit wins for Olmer Marquez at 220 (he's the No. 2-ranked wrestler in Class 3A at 200), Albert Marquez at 120, Alex Alberto at 160, Jack Huggard at 182 and William Rivera at 195.

Battle Mountain's Collin Stilson won by pin over Daniel Barnes of Basalt at 126 pounds.

At 132 pounds, Jesus Morales of Battle Mountain pinned Tai Kim of Basalt in the second period.

At 138, Battle Mountain's Mario DeLara pinned Sander Elliot of Basalt in the second period.

Battle Mountain also won at 145 when Franco Lopez pinned Ryan Borchelt of Basalt in the second period.

Adrian Rivera of the Huskies won by forfeit at 152 pounds.

And at 170 pounds. Wyatt Harwood of Battle Mountain pinned Thomas Wirth of the Longhorns in the second period.

One night earlier at Summit, Albert Marquez of Basalt won a 15-2 major decision over Monica Jimenez of Summit in the 113-pound match.

And at 106, Zach Pagan pinned Alex Barela of Summit in the second period of their match.

Basalt collected forfeit wins for Nathan Rivera at 120, Tai Kim at 132, Sander Elliot at 138, Alex Alberto at 160, Thomas Wirth at 170, Jack Huggard at 182, William Rivera at 195, William Rivera at 195 and Andrew Upton at 220.

At 126, Griffen Chabot of Summit decisioned Daniel Barnes of Basalt 10-7.

At 145, Michael Barton of Summit pinned Ran Borchelt of Basalt in the first period.

Dean Vangsnes of Summit won at 152 pounds by forfeit.

At 285, Will Flannagan of Summit pinned Oswaldo Morales of Basalt.

The Basalt High School wrestling team will compete in the annual Salida Invitational on Saturday.
