Basalt football shuts down Aspen for homecoming win
October 7, 2016
The checkmate came early in Friday's high school football game between host Basalt and Aspen, an eventual 48-0 win for the Longhorns on homecoming.
"I'm super proud of the coaching staff. I'm super proud of the kids," Basalt coach Carl Frerichs said. "We are excited tonight, but we still have our goals and we have a long ways to go."
In the second game of Class 2A Western Slope League play, Basalt controlled everything from the start. After Aspen opened the game with a quick punt, a short field led to a 37-yard touchdown pass from Basalt quarterback Miles Levy to receiver Kyle Roberts for a 7-0 lead.
An interception on the second Aspen possession led to another Levy-to-Roberts touchdown pass, this time from 2 yards out. Aspen again punted on its third possession, and Basalt was able to take a 21-0 lead into the second quarter after Roberts hit Will Chadbourne on a short connection that resulted in a 31-yard touchdown play.
Less than four minutes into the second quarter, Basalt extended its lead to 28-0 when Levy found Roberts for a third time, with Roberts' 12-yard catch and dive toward the pylon resulting in the score.
Aspen's best drive came midway through the second quarter, a long run by AHS junior quarterback R.J. Peshek that got the Skiers deep into Longhorn territory. However, Aspen fumbled the ball inside the red zone, and Basalt recovered at its own 11-yard line.

"I thought all three layers on defense did their assignments and we really shut down their offense," Frerichs said. "The offensive line is just really playing well, and I thought Miles Levy just had an incredible game on the offensive side of the ball."
The teams traded a few more possessions without scores before Basalt made it 34-0 on a wild 61-yard touchdown run by Levy. The extra point was no good.
A quick Aspen interception gave Basalt a chance to score again right before halftime. This time it was junior running back Alex Alberto who scored, a 3-yard run making it 41-0 at the break.
The entire second half was played with a running clock, the lone score being a touchdown pass from backup quarterback Trevor Reuss to Juan Rosario.
The loss drops Aspen to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in WSL play. Basalt improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in WSL play.
"The coaching staff and the kids, they are working really hard," Frerichs said. "We still have a long way to go if we want to be the team we really want to be."
Also Friday in 2A WSL action, Moffat County moved to 2-0 in league play with a 28-3 win over Coal Ridge, while Roaring Fork beat Steamboat Springs, 34-8. The Bulldogs and Longhorns are the only undefeated teams remaining in league action.
Next week, Basalt will play at Coal Ridge, while Aspen travels to Roaring Fork. Steamboat will play at Moffat County.
