Aspen’s Williams third at 3A state tennis

The Class 3A state tournament wrapped up Saturday in Greeley for the Aspen High School girls tennis team, with sophomore Mary Williams taking third at No. 1 singles.

Williams, who lost her one and only match at No. 1 singles as a freshman, made the quarterfinals this year before falling to Colorado Academy freshman Sammy Moore-Thomson. Williams bounced back by winning a pair of playback matches on Friday and then defeated Eaton’s Myiah Scott 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday in the playback final.

Moore-Thomson defeated Steamboat Springs freshman Mae Thorp 6-0, 6-0 in the championship match Saturday. Williams had defeated Thorp in the regional championship last week in Grand Junction.

Aspen’s No. 2 doubles team of junior Grace Ferguson and freshman Karina Keller also played for third place on Saturday, but lost 6-4, 7-5 in the playback finals to the Dawson duo of Allie Blank and Isabelle Shehan.

Aspen finished seventh as a team with 18 points, 11 coming from Williams at No. 1 singles. D’Evelyn (57 points) won the 3A state championship — this was the first season for the classification — followed closely by Colorado Academy and Dawson, which tied for second with 54 points.

Holy Family was fourth, Eaton fifth and Steamboat Springs sixth.
