Aspen and Basalt’s boys soccer teams renew their rivalry this afternoon in Aspen, with both teams entering the contest with unblemished records in Class 3A Western Slope League play.Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the AHS field. And while both teams enter the match on relatively equal footing – Aspen at 3-0 in league, Basalt at 2-0 – it’s the Longhorns that remain the team to beat. In four meetings over the last two seasons, Basalt has marched to consecutive league championships with a combined 3-0-1 record against Aspen.”But Aspen is always a tough game,” Erik Streff, the Basalt coach, noted earlier this week. “No matter what the records are, home or away.”Aspen, like Basalt, a young team still looking to define itself, enters its third match in a week with two consecutive wins against league opponents Vail Mountain and Eagle Valley. Basalt, meanwhile, last played Saturday, beating Eagle Valley at home.”It’s going to be tough,” Aspen coach Grant “Junior” Sutherland said this week. “It’ll be our third game in five days, but we’ll give it our best showing. We’ve had two good results now in our last two games and hopefully we’re not too tired to get another one.””We haven’t beaten them in two years now, so we’ll just slug away and see if we can give ’em a good run,” Sutherland continued.Aspen and Basalt softball are also scheduled to face off today, beginning at 4 p.m. at the AHS field. Aspen was rained out Tuesday at home against Eagle Valley in its last outing. Aspen coach Ed Zane said weather and field conditions could play spoiler today.”It’s doesn’t look too promising,” Zane said after Wednesday morning’s snowfall. “The fields are pretty much full.”Other Aspen-Basalt contests this weekend include:FootballFriday, 4 p.m. kickoff at the Aspen Middle School fieldVolleyballFriday, 6 p.m. at the Aspen High gym
