Aspen U-19s go undefeated

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Aspen under-19 girls hockey team capped off its undefeated regular-season schedule with two shutout victories on the road in Denver and Colorado Springs last weekend.

The first game on Saturday against Colorado Springs was canceled since most of the Aspen team was stuck in Glenwood, waiting for I-70 to reopen. The teams did face off that night at 7 o’clock, with Aspen starting the game with just seven players. (During the course of the game, Aspen returned to full strength as players trickled in from the snowy road, after up to 10 hours on the road in some cases.)

Though Colorado Spring was tough, they proved no match for the strong Aspen team. Maddy D’Amato scored the first goal, assisted by linemates Reilly Gallagher and Dylan Braun. Aspen then executed a perfect breakout play, with three quick passes to the trailing Braun who scored with a hard shot. Finally, Braun scored unassisted to bring the final score to 3-0.

On Sunday afternoon, the Aspen girls faced another tough Front Range team in the Colorado Selects. Aspen played a near-perfect game, again shutting out their opponent. Though the entire team played well, only Gallagher scored, a hat trick at that, in another 3-0 win.

The weekend wins produced a perfect season for the Aspen U-19s, unbeaten in regulation play. The only outstanding goal for the team remains their quest for a fourth consecutive state championship. The state tournament is slated for March 3-5 in Denver.
