Aspen Speedos swim club rolls through Glenwood invite

When you beat the other team’s coach, you know you’ve had a good day in the pool. Aspen Swim Club’s Sevi Multin, 16, did just that last weekend when he beat Durango Swim Club coach Alex Martinek, 24, in at least one event at the 2016 Deep Freeze Invitational in Glenwood Springs.

“It’s kind of fun. The Durango coach is young and he competes. He’s still a really quality swimmer,” Aspen Swim Club coach Gordon Gerson said. “Sevi had a fun race with Alex, the Durango coach, in the boys 100 fly, and just nipped him there. I know Alex was impressed with the work that Sevi has been doing.”

Multin’s lone win in Glenwood came in the 100-yard butterfly, his time of 54.96 seconds edging Martinek’s second-place time of 55.47 seconds. Multin also ended the meet, held Nov. 12 and 13, with six second-place finishes.

It was part of another dominant meet by the Speedos. They won the two-day meet with 1,359 points, well ahead of second-place Team Sopris’ 665.5 points.

“The meet overall was really good,” Multin said. “The whole team in general did really, really well, even the little kids.”

Aspen tallied top-five finishes across the board, even breaking a few club records in relays. Speedo swimmers with at least one individual first-place finish in an event include: Gavin Boggs, Davy Brown, Lauren Fetzko, Hannah Freeman, Sara Michelin, Kennidy Quist, Micah Sanders-Silva, Calvin Somers, Connor Somers, Olivia Somers, Kayla Tehrani, Penelope White and Multin.

“It was fun, but really hard,” said 7-year-old Olivia Somers. Somers is one of the best young swimmers for Aspen, winning four different events in Glenwood. Her twin brother, Calvin, nearly matched her with three wins.

“It was pretty fun,” Calvin Somers said as well. “I was pretty proud.”

The Glenwood meet is essentially the end of the short-course preseason, according to Gerson. The stakes get much higher going forward. Next for the Speedos will be the Las Vegas Super Finals, held the first weekend of December, which will pit them against some of the best swim clubs in Colorado, California, Arizona and Nevada.

The following weekend a few select swimmers will go to Texas for junior nationals.

“Now we get into some meets that are of increased importance,” Gerson said. “I think back to 10 years ago when we’d show up at meets on the Front Range with five kids and one coach. It’s a different story now.”
