May 8, 2017
Aspen High School sophomore Zoe Guthrie overcame the windy, hilly golf course at Battlement Mesa in Parachute on Monday to qualify for the Class 3A girls state golf tournament.
Guthrie, playing in her first regional tournament, shot 110 to finish in 19th place. She played alongside the No. 2- and No. 4-ranked players in the state.
Freshman Avery Hirsch also competed for the Skiers, shooting 142.
"Zoe had a rough stretch of holes midway through her round, but hung tough to score well enough to qualify for states," AHS coach Don Buchholz said. "I'm really proud of both of them."
Colorado Academy's Caroline Jordaan, the No. 2-ranked player in the state, shot 79 to win the Class 3A Region 4 tournament. She beat Rifle's Masi Smith in a sudden-death playoff. Colorado Academy had four players finish in the top six.
The Class 3A state tournament will take place May 22-23 over 36 holes at Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield.
