Aspen High School Nordic team starts fast
January 13, 2016
The Skiers, literally, are off to a fast start.
The Aspen High School Nordic ski team opened the season with a fast performance at the Summit Invitational at the Frisco Nordic Center last weekend.
"Our first CHSAA race went very well," head coach Travis Moore said. He said a few Aspen racers missed the event because of illness.
But those who raced posted excellent times, he said.
"Our four boys skied really well, with Jack Sweeney leading the way with a third-place finish," Moore said. Ricky Mojcik and Everett Olson followed closely for Aspen.
Wojcik finished 18th and Everett Olson was 31st for the Skiers.

All three qualified for the State Skiing Championships as a result of their finishes last weekend.
Paul Psaledakis competed in his first race, Moore said.
Chelsea Moore led the way for the Aspen girls. She finished fourth with teammate Nina Beidleman right behind in fifth place. Jozie Wille finished ninth to give the Skiers three competitors in the top 10.
That helped the Aspen girls finish second in the team scoring behind Vail Mountain School (171-165). Battle Mountain finished third in the girls 5-kilometer skate (160).
Summit was fourth with Lake County (Leadville) fifth. Eagle Valley and Evergreen tied for sixth. Twelve teams participated.
Megan Rossman of Battle Mountain won the girls race with Bridget Donovan and Annie Blakslee, both of Battle Mountain, in second and third, respectively.
Hazel Wille finished 15th for AHS with Adair Pattillo 16th. Logan McNamee of Aspen was 26th.
All qualified for the state championships.
Vail Mountain School won the boys event with 163 points.
Battle Mountain was second at 158. Third went to Summit (153) with Middle Park fourth (151) and Aspen fifth (139).
The Aspen Nordic ski team will compete in the Battle Mountain Invitational at Maloit Park in Minturn on Saturday.
On Sunday, the AHS team will participate in the community race at 10 a.m. at the high school trails.
The high school state championships this year will be staged in Aspen on the high school trails adjacent to the Aspen Valley Ski Club offices.
The state 5K classic is set for Feb. 19 in Aspen with the state 5K skate race on Feb. 20.
