Aspen High girls tennis team wins regional, six qualify for state tournament

The Aspen High School girls tennis team poses for a photo Saturday after winning its Class 3A regional in Grand Junction.

The torch wasn't so much passed as the Aspen High School girls tennis team simply took it.

Saturday in Grand Junction, the Skiers won their Class 3A regional, edging a Steamboat Springs squad that entered having won its previous 12 regional championships.

"Steamboat is kind of our rival and our biggest competition there. It was pretty close," Aspen coach Lauren MacKay said. "They do it by points and kind of right at the end we weren't sure who was going to win, so that was pretty exciting."

Of Aspen's 11 varsity players, six are headed to next week's 3A state meet in Greeley. The Skiers took regional titles at both No. 1 and No. 3 singles, as well as No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

AHS sophomore Mary Williams defeated Steamboat's Mae Thorp at No. 1 singles, giving Williams her second consecutive regional title. Aspen senior Anna Citron was the regional champion at No. 3 singles, edging Steamboat's Lily Fox.

"Aspen really outplayed us," SSHS coach John Aragon told the Steamboat Today. "It was great tennis to watch. It was competitive all the way through. It all boiled down to the fact that they handled the stress a little better than we did. It's not like anyone ever gave up. They were just a little better than we were on this day."
