Aspen High girls tennis gets No. 2 doubles team into 3A state semifinals

The Aspen High School girls tennis team competed Thursday in the first day of the Class 3A state tournament in Greeley, with its No. 2 doubles team advancing through to play again at 9 a.m. Friday.

Junior Grace Ferguson and freshman Karina Keller teamed to go 2-0 in matches Thursday, and will play the D'Evelyn duo of Cammy Lee and Elisa Dean in Friday’s semifinals.

Ferguson and Keller won their opening match 6-3, 6-4 over Pueblo Central's Brittney Martinez and Tehya Gutierrez, before beating St. Mary's Academy's Katherine Crise and Ali Leen, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.

Aspen's No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Bliss Pekkala and freshman Olivia Burkley defeated La Junta's Camryn Gonzales and Emily Ramirez in the first round, 6-2, 7-6. The AHS duo's state run ended in the quarterfinals, a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Colorado Academy's Ann-Claire Lin and Lila Arnold.

Aspen sophomore Mary Williams went 1-1 at No. 1 singles. She cruised by University's Janna Phansiri, 6-4, 6-1, to win her first career state tournament match. She then lost 6-2, 6-0 to Colorado Academy freshman Sammy Moore-Thomson in the quarterfinals. Williams and the No. 3 doubles team could compete in a playback match Friday.

Steamboat Springs High School freshman Mae Thorp, who Williams defeated in the regional championship last week, went 2-0 Thursday to make the semis at No. 1 singles.

At No. 3 singles, Aspen senior Anna Citron lost in the first round, falling 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 to Fountain Valley's Delaney DeMott.
