Aspen basketball, hockey all winners Friday

The Aspen High School basketball teams earned their first sweep of the season on Friday, with both the boys and girls defeating host Lake County in Leadville.

The AHS boys won 49-26 over the Panthers (1-9), thanks in large part to a blistering start. The Skiers led 15-0 after a quarter, and outscored Lake County 13-3 in the third quarter to get to 6-4 on the season. It was the first time the Aspen boys have won back-to-back games this year.

A.J. Detrick led the team with 16 points.

For the AHS girls, their 36-29 win over Lake County (4-7) was their first of the season after starting 0-9. The Skiers led 7-6 after a quarter and 13-8 at halftime.

Cliara Sanchez led the Skiers with 17 points.

Both AHS teams return home today to host Moffat County. The Bulldogs swept both matchups in their first meeting on Jan. 6 in Craig.

Also Friday, the Aspen High School hockey team defeated visiting Heritage, 5-2, at Lewis Ice Arena. The win is the third in a row for the Skiers (4-5-1), who host Cheyenne Mountain this afternoon.
