AHS girls earn three victories

After five consecutive losses, Aspen High School’s girls basketball team rebounded with three victories in the past week, including a win over Hotchkiss at home Saturday.

With dominating scoring from junior Liz Floyd, and precision passing and tough defensive play from sophomore Carly Magill, Aspen held off Hotchkiss for a 37-33 win.

“Liz Floyd has had an amazing year,” Lance Finkbeiner, Aspen’s head coach, said following the game. “And Carly Magill’s always in the mix; this was one of her better games.”

Floyd scored a team-best 14 points, followed by Corie Thompson, a sophomore, who had nine points along with a team-high 10 rebounds.

“This was a good win for us, for sure,” Finkbeiner said. “We had some timely turnovers at the end of the game.”

Fouls were also a factor. With less than two minutes left in the game and down by four points, Hotchkiss threw a full-court press on the Skiers and fouled Aspen’s Alex Bethel twice in the process. She made two of her free throws to give Aspen some breathing room and the eventual victory.

“It was a little ugly,” Finkbeiner said, “but we’ll take it.”

Aspen, now 5-9 overall and 3-6 in the conference, travels to Basalt

Tuesday night to face a Lady Longhorn team that has won 12 straight.
