The Aspen High School boys lacrosse team, with a fast first-period start, rolled to another Mountain League victory Friday afternoon, defeating visiting Vail Mountain School 14-11.

“We started off the game excellent … Reece Cohan lit up the cage with his first two shots,” said Aspen interim head coach David Miller. “And our defense was stellar. Zac Storm, Liam Rigney and Victor (Dunn) stood on their heads out there.”

Cohan’s early goals offset a 1-0 Vail Mountain lead when Griffin O’Connell, a 6-7 scoring machine, potted the game’s first goal in the opening minute.

Ladd Taylor, Jonathan Wells and Jordan Hornburg added Aspen goals in the first period with the Skiers leading 5-2.

“Jonathan Wells … just takes the game on his shoulders and carries us; he runs up and down,” Miller said of the AHS senior, who finished with three goals against the Gore Rangers.

Aspen led 9-6 at halftime after a 4-4 second period.

“In the third quarter, they had the momentum” Miller said after VMS tied the game 9-9 with three consecutive goals — two from Dylan Hardenbergh and one from Robby Gruber.

Aspen scored the go-ahead goal with 4:07 to play.

Cooper Campisi scored a transition goal after Wells scooped up a ground ball, raced upfield and passed ahead to Campisi.

“At the end of the third quarter, we got (momentum) back,” the Aspen interim head coach said as the Skiers improved to 6-2 in the Mountain League, 6-4 overall.

The Skiers finished by outscoring the Gore Rangers 3-2 in the final quarter.

Hornburg led Aspen with four goals, on the heels of three goals in Aspen’s win over Summit earlier this week.

Henry Godfrey, Dawson Holmes and RJ Peshek also scored for the Skiers, who have won three consecutive games after a midseason coaching change.

Kyle Negomir led Vail Mountain with three goals. Hardenbergh, Luke Verratti and Tyler Hancock scored two goals each.

VMS moved to 6-6 overall, 3-3 in league play.

Aspen will host Fruita Monument on Wednesday with the league lead at stake.
