Dig volleyball?

Dig it or not, volleyball is back on center stage in Aspen this week.

The 43rd annual Aspen MotherLode Volleyball Classic will start play today and continue doubles volleyball matches through the Labor Day Weekend.

The event is produced annually by volleyball promoter Leon Fell.

He said the 43rd annual MotherLode, which started as a backyard barbecue and volleyball party, will feature some of the best professional and amateur beach volleyball players in the United States and Canada.

Fell said all of the top-ranked National Volleyball League men’s open players will partiipate in the Aspen event this year along with a handful of AVP pro beach players.

As in years past, the Aspen MotherLode will be one of the top developmental volleyball tournaments in the country where numerous pro players and Olympians started.

“Besides the top NVL players and many off the AVP tour, the Men’s and Women’s Open divisions will host top amateurs who are trying to get on the pro beach tour,” Fell said.

The MotherLode also is home to the MotherLode Masters DiG Magazine National Championships for senior age-group players.

The MotherLode Masters will begin play today with the Men’s 60’s and 50’s and the Women’s 45’s.

The MotherLode will continue Thursday with the Men’s 55’s and 45’s and Women’s 35’s.

On Friday, play will open for the Co-Ed Open and the Men’s Masters 35-over.

The championship courts at Koch Lumber Park will host the top players all weekend.

Spectator admission is free all weekend.

Amateur divisions will feature play on grass courts at Wagner Park, Rio Grande Park and the Aspen School District campus.
